Ubiquitous Stand: A Desktop Interactive Display Stand

Bringing the Complexity of Urban Fabrics to Your Workspace

The spatial structure of Ubiquitous Stand draws inspiration from the intricate grid patterns of skyscrapers in a local city. Designed by Naai-Jung Shih, this desktop interactive display stand adds a touch of sophistication to any workspace.

The Ubiquitous Stand stands out with its 3D grid frames that mimic the complexity of urban fabrics. The arrangement of holes on the stand can be augmented with flowers, lollipops, or other objects, creating a unique and personalized display. The chromed surface reflects and changes tones, adding an element of dynamism to the displayed subjects.

Thanks to rapid-prototyping (RP) FDM technology, the base object of the Ubiquitous Stand is made of ABS. The layers of frames and openings are grown from a simple 3D shape, with the final configuration adjusted to provide different layers and orientations of openings. The finishing is coated using an innovative "spray electroplating" method, resulting in a sleek chrome-like appearance.

Measuring at 13*6.5*11 cm, the Ubiquitous Stand is compact yet eye-catching. Its unique design allows for both active and passive interaction. Users can add their own "meanings" to the grid pattern by placing small objects that hold personal significance. Alternatively, they can simply enjoy the changing reflections by rotating the stand and observing how the tones shift with different viewpoints.

The design process for the Ubiquitous Stand started two years ago and continued until 2015, with a focus on metaphor and surface attributes. Naai-Jung Shih aimed to depart from traditional orthogonal patterns and create a new dimension of organization. The stand was created in Taipei, Taiwan, and showcases the designer's dedication to originality and innovation.

The Ubiquitous Stand has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2016, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Ubiquitous Stand's ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder sets it apart as a truly remarkable piece of design.
